Grape Expectations: How U of M Scientists Built Minnesota's Unlikely Wine Empire..
By: Beau Farrell on October 07, 2025
The Minnesota State Fair amateur wine competition shows just how far we've come in wine-making. These sophisticated wines tell Minnesota's bigger story.
Thirty years ago, Minnesota wine was nearly impossible. Today, we have over 75 wineries making bottles that compete with anyone.
When Wine Seemed Impossible
Minnesota winemaking used to be a basement hobby. Traditional grapes die at -30°F, and our short growing season meant they couldn't ripen anyway.
But Minnesota's wine pioneers didn't give up.
They made wine from anything that grew here:
- Wild grapes
- Rhubarb
- Dandelions
- Chokecherries
Not glamorous, but it kept the dream alive.
The Game-Changing Science
The University of Minnesota's (U of M) grape breeding program started in the mid-1980s. The goal was to create grapes that survive Minnesota winters AND make great wine.
Scientists tested thousands of seedlings over decades. They crossed cold-hardy native grapes with quality European varieties until they found winners.
The breakthrough varieties:
Marquette (2006): The game changer
- Survives -30°F
- Makes medium-bodied reds with cherry and spice notes
- Now grown across the Midwest
La Crescent: The aromatic white
- High aromatics
- Bright, fruity flavors
- Perfect for Minnesota's climate
The growing family: Frontenac, Itasca, and Clarion
From Basements to Big Business
The science worked. Minnesota went from zero to 75+ commercial wineries.
By the numbers:
- Millions of dollars in economic activity
- Varieties planted across the Midwest, New England, and Canada
- Wineries from Cannon River to Carlos Creek to the North Shore
Minnesota wines have their own style: bright acidity, fruit-forward, surprisingly complex.
