A Journey to the Heart of Burgundy: The Hospice de Beaune Wine Auction

Featured Image

For half a century, the Farrell family has shared their love of wine with Minnesota through Haskell’s. Beau FarrellIMG_1418 continues this family tradition as Vice President, following the path his father Jack created. The family recently took a trip to Beaune, France—to celebrate Jack's life and the passion for wine he passed down through generations.

The Hospice de Beaune Wine Auction has brought people together since 1859, combining stunning wines with heartfelt giving. Here, some of the world's finest barrels are sold to support the local hospital, creating a perfect blend of passion and purpose.

For the Farrells, it offered the perfect setting to honor Jack's passion while immersing themselves in the rich heritage dedicated to wine excellence.

The Medieval Charm of Beaune

The heart of Burgundy wine country welcomes visitors with worn cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved 15th-century buildings. Around every corner you’ll find something new—intricate stone carvings, colorful shutters, and hidden courtyards. There is the ancient defensive wall encircling the town, now embraced by a walking trail where the protective moat once stood, offering stunning views of both the medieval center and rolling vineyards.

During the festival season, Beaune transforms into something out of a storybook. Historic buildings glow with warm lights while winter garlands hang across narrow streets. Market squares fill with vendors and visitors, creating a joyful atmosphere that celebrates both tradition and community.

A Festival Like No Other

Think Minnesota State Fair meets Renaissance Festival, but with wine at the heart of it all! The streets of Beaune come alive with food stands selling tasty treats like frog legs, local cheeses, fresh oysters, and steaming French onion soup. You'll also find wine bottle opening contests, bands playing music, and the smell of roasting chestnuts in the air.

Local craftspeople set up shop through town, showing off handmade wine accessories, pottery, and other items. People spend their days exploring these markets, tasting wines, and enjoying the spirit that brings everyone together.

The Historic Hospice de Beaune Wine AuctionIMG_1392

The legendary Hospice de Beaune Wine Auction is a tradition dating back to 1859. Local winemakers donate entire barrels of their finest wines (each equivalent to about 300 bottles) to be sold in the historic Hospice building with its distinctive colorful tiled roof.

The 2024 auction broke records when one Premier Cru barrel sold for €360,000. All proceeds go to the local hospital and healthcare services, continuing a centuries-old tradition of community support that makes this event much more than a wine sale—it's a celebration of generosity that has improved countless lives for nearly 170 years.

A Night of Honor at Clos Vougeot

The beautiful Château du Clos Vougeot hosts a special black-tie dinner to wrap up the auction weekend. Guests enjoy a wonderful seven-course meal paired with amazing wines in a grand hall lit by candles. The room fills with wine lovers all gathered to celebrate Burgundy's rich wine traditions.

Cathy Farrell received the title of Grand Officier in the Tastevin society. This special honor is given to people who have done important work sharing and protecting Burgundy wines. Being named a Grand Officier connects recipients to a respected group of wine ambassadors who help others discover and appreciate the special qualities of wines from this historic region.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

The trip to Beaune honored Jack Farrell's lifelong passion for wine and the connections it creates between people, cultures, and traditions. At every turn—the historic auction and the intimate tastings in ancient cellars—the spirit of Haskell’s was reflected in Burgundy's dedication to quality, community, and sharing knowledge.

As Haskell’s continues to grow, the timeless values witnessed in Beaune will continue to guide the way forward. Burgundy, with its centuries-old dedication to both exceptional winemaking and community support, mirrors the philosophy that makes Haskell's special: that great wine is about more than what's in the glass—it's about the stories, connections, and moments it helps create.
