Wine Packaging Gets Eco-Friendly and Innovative

When it comes to wine packaging, the bottle is just the beginning.

We are often asked about the different types and styles of packaging that are happening in the wine industry. There are so many different innovations happening with packaging that winemakers are constantly trying different options to see what sticks. (Hint: the canned wine fad is no longer just a fad.)

It could just be that winemakers think people are tired of looking at the old, classic, bottle of wine and would like to try something new, but it goes deeper than that. A lot of the changes that are happening with the packaging of wine has less to do with “looks” and more to do with functionality.

How Functionality Aids Innovations

A good example of functionality is wine that is packaged in cans, boxes and tetra packs. (Wondering what a tetra pack is? Here is a super-informative little video.) These packaging options are great for a couple of reasons:

  1. They are more environmentally friendly than glass.

Glass production has a high exposure to the elements during production. Cans, boxes and tetra packs are all a more environmentally friendly choice.

  1. They are more portable. (Think: hiking, camping, picnics, etc.) Pop one of these in your pack when heading up to the boundary waters for a canoe trip. You can thank us later.

Back in the day, we used to see these mammoth jugs to hold wine. They are certainly a good option if you are having a party, but what if you’re not? Upon opening, these large jugs would turn quickly and were considered a step above “blah” for quality.

New Packaging Improves Wine Quality

Now, with new innovations, large bags or boxes of wine contain a much higher quality wine, in package that is more environmentally friendly, AND can last longer! Talk about great innovation.

The best part is, it really doesn’t matter where you are, you can enjoy wines in these unique types of packaging. Whether you’re at a park, at the pool, or a beach that doesn’t allow glass, you can grab one of these options and be on your way.

Bonus Tip: Do some research to find out what quality of wine is going into a certain bag or box before you buy. A little work up front will really ensure that you’ll savor that first sip whether you plant your toes in your hiking boots or in the sand.
