Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote an ode to the first grape of America, Catawba. It’s believed to be the earliest native American grape used in wine production and was the most widely planted grape in the United States from approx. 1825 to 1850. It’s now primarily produced in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
Believe it or not, during Prohibition, grape concentrate was sold with this warning: “After dissolving the brick in a gallon of water, do not place the liquid in a jug away in the cupboard for twenty days, because then it will turn into wine.” Yes, that’s exactly what people did during Prohibition.
